Firefox about:config tricks 3 – Don’t recommend extensions

Mozilla, plz stop

One of the more annoying Firefox tendencies of late has been tech pestering. You know, getting in your face to get you to do something, interact with something, try something.

On the “Manage your extensions” page (Tools | Extensions and themes) this manifests as a bunch of unasked for suggestions for extensions to install. Years and years ago I probably had 10-20 extensions in a typical Firefox profile. These days it’s uBlock origin, a password manager and at most one or two more. Less is more, especially when security enters the equation. I am not looking for more random extensions.

You can turn off “Recommend extensions as you browse” in ordinary settings but these recommendations don’t disappear from your “Manage” page. That only happens if you go into about:config and toggle the following setting to false:

extensions.htmlaboutaddons.recommendations.enabled
